Useful directory lists — only from linkbuilders

Apr 20, 2011 by

When you need a good list of directories or social bookmarking sites, no matter whether you are looking for some general directories or other sites specializing in a certain topic or language, not really the mere number of the included sites count but the ratio of the directories which are still alive and accept link submissions in a timely manner.

Aging of directory lists

If someone once happened to gather a list of directories or social bookmarking sites which was offering SEO-friendly links without nofollow attributes or redirects,  it does not really mean that this list could also work for you. As time goes by, many sites will be shut down, discontinued, become a paid directory, etc. so the older a directory list is, the more useless information it will contain. A two years old list therefore can be completely useless in many cases.

status of the included directories

Not to mention the fact that discovering new directiries is usually the first step when you build an usable database of directories. You should go and see whether they actually accept your submissions, and if so the link they provide will be valid and usable for SEO purposes. Although finding new directories might be not that time consuming, determining whether they are still working, is not the easiest task.

No directory list will do for you!

This is the reason why — based on our experience — you will never find a really usable, up-to-date directory list available publicly on the web. As neither the vast majority of “directory of directories” sites nor “directory submitter software” is owned by link marketeers who are working with the listed directories on a daily basis, the list of directories they offer will always be far from optimal.

On one hand, there will be many listed directories which have never been used by the owner of that list — if it is to be a foreign language or an other niche directory, this is quite common. On the other hand once a site is included, its status is rarely checked by hand and updated accordingly.

Only the directory list that you create

Bad news is that if you have no time to waste by submitting your links to  a number of directories which will never accept your submissions or if you plan to do regular link building, (almost) the only way of getting a really usable directory list is to create your own.

There will be one exception though: in the near future we will offer some of our proven directory lists for a minimum charge. Although many link marketeers would never publish their similar lists, since usually we do not promote e.g. British sites on the English web or German sites on the German web but foreign sites on English or German web, we really don’t have that kind of competitors, with whom we would not like to share our “secret” lists.

Other piece of good news is that there is a tool which significantly eases not only he link submission process but the creation of any kind of directory list which is the simply wonderful AllSubmitter.

We will also give detailed instructions on how to build your own directory lists soon, so stay tuned!

AllSubmitter – The most powerful directory submitter

AllSubmitter – The most powerful directory submitter

Although AllSubmitter offers a variety of SEO functions, its most important features are focusing on semi-automatic and automatic directory submission. The philosophy behind this directory submitter is to provide an all-purpose directory (article directory, social bookmarking site, etc.) submission tool which is capable to automate any (directory) submission task.

Trust me, I am not exaggerating when I state that this directory submitter is the best and by far the most powerful directory submission tool on Earth — something I have been looking for more than a year, and just came across it by mere coincidence. It’s good to know that there are quite a few reasons why you have never heard of AllSubmitter though:

  • the software is written by Russian programmers, therefore the features and the documentation focuses primarily on the Russian market, so the English user interface and documentation is not up to the standards.
  • given the complexity of this tool (and also because of the lack of documenation) it has a really long learning curve, so it takes a lot of time to get a clue about what this tool can do.
  • maybe it’s jsut too good, so instead of spreading the news about AllSubmitter you’d rather decide not to blog about it, keeping the secret of the tool which makes your directory submissions many times faster. :)

All-purpose submitter tool

allsubmitter-menu

While other directory submitter software usually come with directory lists, by default AllSubmitter has an empty directory database. Although for an extra fee ($49) you can buy a directory list, AllSubmitter is best when you are ready to build your own database — something quite common if you do submissions for a niche or regional or language market.

There are a lot of innovative features to ease the management of your directory list: discovering web directories using search engines, importing directory lists from web sites, getting important properties of the listed directories such as domain Page Rank, and many other features for categorizing your directories, even importing and exporting these lists from/to other AllSubmitter instances, therefore potentially from other AllSubmitter users.

Automated and semi-automated submission

While many directory submitters can handle effectively only one or just a few directory scripts, this directory submitter is built so that it could automate basically any directory submission be the site powered by PHP Link Directory, eSyindicat, indexU or any other, even custom directory script.

For some directories this submitter provides automatic submission, which means that once you set up a directory, you will never have to visit it again, only click on the URL in a list, choose the most appropriate category and enter the Captcha code — something which will make your directory submissions lightning fast.

Unfortunately this tool cannot perfectly handle form elements that are loaded by AJAX calls, therefore you cannot fully automate submission for a site which uses newer Pligg versions (with reCaptcha which is loaded by JavaScript into the submission form) or for certain PHP LD powered directories where you have to choose the category by using a JavaScript-based category chooser.

Similarly you will be able to use only the semi-automated method for many eSyndicat directories where the submission preview is loaded by asynchronous JavaScript code or anywhere where istead of Captchas TextChas (tricky questions) are used to prevent bots from submitting.

There are a lot of other functions such as random rotation of descriptions and titles, a built-in e-mail client to check validation and confirmation e-mails etc., so the only thing I miss is the submission checking function based on site searches.

Conclusion

AllSubmitter is a very sophisticated tool with a peculiar user interface reflecting a well though but rather unconventional system. Once you get familiarized with it you will be amazed by its versatility. To get to that point be prepared to invest $179 in the license and spend at least a week with learning until you get up to speed with this directory submitter. You will also have to get a Windows machine because this tool runs only on Windows XP/Vista/7.

List of German Pligg sites

Jul 3, 2010 by

List of German language social bookmarking sites powered by pligg. In this post I would like to share with you my list of German Pligg sites. The method I used to collect them was to search for two key expressions almost every Pligg powered site has: “veröffentliche” (means published) and “bevorstehende” (means upcoming). The below social bookmarking and social news site list contains 64 working Pligg sites (as of July, 2010).

I have only included those sites which might be useful for link building. As I don’t want to support spamming, I have not included those pages where I could see that the bookmarking site in question only collects sites from a niche topic, or where the site profile was more like a human-edited social news portal than a “do it what you want, we just installed Pligg on our site with a basic skin, without adding categories and such”. All in all this list is useful if you want to promote German language web sites.

Is Automatic Directory Submission Evil?

Jun 20, 2010 by

Submit your site manually! — you can frequently see this advice on different SEO forums, perhaps because many link builders think automated submissions are equal to spamming. While it is true that automatic directory submitters can be used to spam others’ web directories or social bookmarking sites, they can be used for legitimate purposes too, just like nuclear energy can be used for other purposes than building an H-bomb.

Feature overview of automatic submitters

While you submit to various directories manually, there are quite a few tasks to accomplish:

  • gathering a list of directories where you plan to submit,
  • reading the submission guidelines to see whether your site would fit,
  • physically filling out the form fields,
  • varying the content of textual fields like title and description,
  • finding the best category for your site,
  • solving various CAPTCHAs,
  • administering where, how and when have you submitted your site.

The majority of these tasks means tedious work for you without much thinking, and this is where automated submission software can give a hand to you.

Providing directory lists

It is true that some directory submitters compile their directory lists based on technological criteria rather than quality criteria — simply because they can handle only directories powered by a certain directory script —, but there are others which can handle almost any type of directories or even let you add your own directory collection.

That’s why some automated submitters can offer lower quality directory lists, while other can give you access to directories you would not have discovered on your own.

Adhering to submission guidelines

First of all let’s differentiate the two basic types of automatic submissions:

  • semi-automatic submission means that the software loads the submission form just as you have opened it with your browsers, while
  • automatic submission lets you choose category and solve CAPTCHAs without actually displaying the submisison page.

Therefore in case of semi-automatic submission, you can easily read the submission rules, so just as with manual submission, you can avoid spamming directories.

On the other hand, directory software which provide automatic submission methods usually only include those directories which have no special rules or criteria for submissions, directories which collect every kind of web sites, not only those which fit in a narrow niche or regional topic.

Filling form fields

This step is where automated directory submission can show its strength: while some browsers can help you to auto-fill string fields having clicked in the field, text areas have to be filled in with at least copy-pasting your text. It is obvious that your submission won’t be better if the name and e-mail fields are filled in by hand.

Directory submitters not only fill all the necessary fields immediately but also offer features to generate mostly unique titles and descriptions by combining or randomly rotating predefinded texts — something you would rarely do manually.

Choosing the right category

Sometimes when you have to browse through a long list of categories using a dropdown menu, it is hard to find the right category and also takes a lot of time. Directory submitters can suggest the appropriate category or highlight multiple categories in the list based on your predefined keywords, or simply choose a category you have alredy used by previous submissions.

Solving CAPTCHAs

The fact that directory submitters can provide you with automated services for solving captchas doesn’t mean that these tools are built to spam. Captchas pose an unnecessary problem for us too who have never spammed (at least intentionally) any directory.

Keeping track of the submission process

Directory submitters offer various tools to administer the submission process: where and when have you submitted your site, what texts have you used and what has been the result of the submission, etc.

If you do this manually, sometimes you can erroneusly submit to a directory twice or simply omit a directory which is on your list, but obviously if you automate it, it will not do any harm.

Automatic vs. manual submission

Having read through the above feature list, you might have seen why  and how directory submitters speed up the entire submission process while providing useful features to further enhance the quality of your submissions.

Automatic or semi-automatic directory submitters are just tools which let you quickly spam hundreds of directories or generate worthless external links, but they can also help you to promote your site by getting valuable links quickly and with less efforts than doing it manually. The result depends solely on how conscientiously these tools have been used: a single link created by an automated directory submitter does not have a different smell — it looks just like the submission you would have sent manually.

Does Google recognize automated submissions?

For many webmasters the biggest concern about automatic submissions is that Google will recognize those links which have been created by automatic directory submitters. Fortunately this is not the case, because Google in fact can only recognize unnatural network of external links. Unnatural means for instance that you create

  • hundreds of links with the same anchor text and/or with the same textual context or
  • there are too many links pointing to your site from the same web site or web neigbourhood or
  • your site acquires external links just too quickly, unnaturally quickly.

As you can see these type of links can be created either by manual or automatic submissions, therefore the main factor is that how these techniques are used: both manual submission and automatic submitters can result in absolutely worthless links.

Just keep in mind that you should not submit to each and every directory your submitter software offers, you should not submit with one title/description, and you should not submit to hundreds of directories today, and Google will never figure out how these links have been generated.

Easy Submits — A simple directory submitter

Easy Submits — A simple directory submitter

Easy Submits is a free online directory submitter application with all the necessary basic features to submit your site to a few hundred PHP Link Directory powered web directory. The service can be accessed for free at http://www.easysubmits.com/

Easy Submits is a really simple application but quite handy as well offering only a minimal set of features, but all of them are  implemented in a simple and effective manner. This can be seen right at the registration: you only have to give an URL and a password, and you are immediately ready to go:

Free Directory Submission Home Page

Upon registering the first step will be to complete the submission details about your site, category also included. This directory submitter  lacks the feature of Title/Description rotation or random Title/Description generator, but if you think about how easy is to change them on the interface, you can get to a conclusion that after a certain number of submission you just simply rewrite or modify the title and description of the site you are submitting, you will get similar results.

Free Directory Submission - EasySubmits Data form

The directory list interface is also quite user friendly: it gives you the ability to sort the lists by different criteria (even by Page Rank), give feedback on the directories listed, check the submission status, etc.

Free Directory Submission - EasySubmits Directory List

When you click on a directory in this list, the application will display the submission form of the directories with just the necessary content: nothing more than the fields and their content:

Free Directory Submission - EasySubmits Submission Form

Directory list of Easy Submits

At the time of writing this link directory submitter offers 511 PHP Link Directory powered directories to submit to. 145 direcories of them cannot be found on digiXMAS‘ directory list.

What EasySubmits is good for?

The fact that this directory submitter is a free might make you think that this tool cannot really deliver good results. Based on my experiences with similar services I would suggest that you should not expect too much, not because of the application itself but because of the fact that submitting to a few hundred “nothing special”, PHP Link Directory-based site cannot make miracles.

If you compare EasySubmits to paid directory submitter working with similar directories you can see that for instance digiXMAS has five times more directories, much more features including an integrated service for breaking capthcas, etc.. A big advantage of this online submitter is that you can use it on other platforms than Windows, so Linux or Mac OS X users can benefit from using this tool.

So my suggestion would be that if you are new to directory submissions, EasySubmits is a nice tool to start to play around with — especially if you are a non-Windows user so you cannot install any professional directory submitter on your desktop — but professional tools can save you a lot of time.
